Nick Fleming

2nd Engineer (Marine)

At present I’m the 2nd Engineer onboard the Aurora Australis this is my first trip to Antarctica. When I left school I got an apprenticeship and became a fitter and turner by trade. I ended up deciding that I wanted to do something different so opted to go back to school to re-train. I chose to study at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) to become a marine engineer. In 1999 I went to sea as a trainee engineer before returning to the AMC to finish my qualification. I then completed more time at sea along with further study to gain a 2nd class Certificate of Competency which allows me to work as 2nd Engineer. Whilst working on this voyage I am also studying for an oral exam when I return, which will allow me obtain my 1st class Certificate of Competency.

When I’, not at sea I spent time cruising on my own boat, yacht racing, playing Aussie Rules football and catching up with friends.
