In a past life Brett completed a degree in Health Sciences, focusing on a career path as an Epidemiologist. Since then he has retrained into the technology field and is currently a Senior Technical Officer with the Telecommunications section at the Australian Antarctic Division. Brett has held the voyage positions of Supervising Communications Technical Officer and Deputy Voyage Leader over multiple voyages since 2002, including the previous sea-ice voyage in 2003/2004. In 2006 Brett travelled to Svalbard, Norway, as Field Assistant with the Human Impacts program.

During this voyage Brett will be maintaining satellite, telephone, radio and email systems, and provide general computer support.
