I received my PhD in physics from the University of Bremen, Germany, and joint NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (outside Washington, DC) first as a Post-doc and then permanently as a research scientist. My research interests include the remote sensing of the polar regions and the utilization of remote sensing data to study polar processes.
My current particular focus is on the remote sensing of the sea ice thickness and the snow thickness on top the sea ice using ICESat (a laser altimeter) and AMSR-E (a passive microwave radiometer) data. Both of these variables are very difficult to validate and in situ measurements are critical – something this cruise will provide.
